Model projects 8.6 runs vs market 6.5, 54% win probability at 12.5% EV

The Card

One game to open the NLCS. Tampa Bay at Milwaukee, 7:00 PM CT. The Rays (98-64) visit the Brewers (103-59) after both teams punched through the divisional round—Tampa knocked off Cleveland in five, Milwaukee swept San Diego then took down the Dodgers 3-1. The market has settled on a total of 6.0-6.5 depending on the book, with Milwaukee favored at -1.5 on the run line.

Our model sees a different game. Projection: 8.6 runs (4.8 MIL, 3.9 TB). That's a two-run gap between our number and the market's, translating to 54% win probability on Over 6.5 at 12.5% expected value. The model also disagrees with the run line—it has Milwaukee winning by one run on average, not covering -1.5—but the totals market is where the sharpest edge sits tonight. Three RBI props round out the card, all showing 6-7% edge and strong recent form.

Over 6.5

Model: 8.6 | Line: 6.5 | Model prob: 54.1% | Implied: 48.1% | EV: 12.5%

The cleanest play on the board. Our projection sits two full runs above the closing total, and the edge is meaningful—6% raw, 12.5% expected value. Both offenses have been scoring in October: Tampa averaged 3.8 runs per game against Cleveland's pitching, Milwaukee put up 4.4 per game in their two series. The Brewers have no reported injuries; Tampa is without Shane McClanahan, but their bullpen navigated the ALDS.

Recent form supports the over. Tampa's last five: 3-1 W, 2-3 L, 7-3 W, 3-1 W, 7-3 W. Milwaukee's: 3-1 W, 2-1 W, 7-4 W, 6-2 W, 6-4 W. Four of Milwaukee's last five cleared seven runs, two of Tampa's cleared seven. Playoff baseball tightens, but this market is priced for a pitcher's duel and the model sees a mid-scoring game. +108 at bet365 is the best available number.

Liam Hicks Over 0.5 RBI

Model: 0.56 | Line: 0.5 | Model prob: 27.4% | Implied: 20.6% | EV: 32.9%

Tampa's catcher. The model gives him a 27% chance to drive in a run; the book implies 21%. That 7% edge yields 33% expected value at +385, the highest EV on the card. His recent log: 0, 1, 0, 0, 2 RBI over the last five games. He's averaging 0.4 RBI per game over his last 10, hitting the over in 40% of his last 5 and 30% of his last 10. Against Milwaukee this year, he's 3-for-10 on the over (30%).

The matchup sets up. Tampa projects for 3.9 runs, and Hicks bats in a spot where he'll see runners. He's on a one-game under streak, but the two-RBI game three contests ago shows the ceiling. The line hasn't moved—books are holding 0.5 at long odds. If you believe the runs are coming (see the total), Hicks is a secondary beneficiary at a price that offers real value. +385 at DraftKings.

Jonathan Aranda Over 0.5 RBI

Model: 0.58 | Line: 0.5 | Model prob: 29.7% | Implied: 23.4% | EV: 26.8%

Tampa's first baseman. Model projection of 0.58 RBI puts him just above the Hicks number, with a 30% win probability vs 23% implied. His recent stretch is the most consistent on the card: 40% over rate across L5, L10, and L20. Last five RBI totals: 0, 1, 2, 0, 0. He's averaging 0.5 RBI per game over his last 10, and he's gone over in 33% of his head-to-head games against Milwaukee this season.

Aranda hit two RBI three games ago, then went quiet for two. One-game under streak, but the form underneath is steady—he's hitting the number at a 40% clip across three different sample sizes, which suggests real skill rather than random noise. The Brewers' bullpen will be fresh but overworked after a short turnaround from the NLDS. If Tampa's projected 3.9 runs come through, Aranda profiles as a middle-order beneficiary. +327 at DraftKings.

Christian Yelich Over 0.5 RBI

Model: 0.69 | Line: 0.5 | Model prob: 32.4% | Implied: 26.0% | EV: 24.4%

Milwaukee's DH and the home side's cleanest RBI angle. Model projects 0.69 RBI, the highest on the card, with a 32% win probability at +284. That's a 6% edge and 24% expected value. Yelich has been productive in October: last five games show 0, 0, 2, 0, 1 RBI. He's averaging 0.4 RBI per game over his last 10 and hitting the over in 40% of his last 20 games. Against Tampa this season, he's 2-for-6 (33%).

Two-game under streak, but the two-RBI performance three games ago and the one-RBI game five games ago bookend the cold stretch. The Brewers project for 4.8 runs, and Yelich bats in a spot to capitalize on traffic. His form is slightly lumpier than Aranda's (30% L10 vs 40%), but the projection and matchup context are stronger—Milwaukee is home, favored, and facing a Tampa bullpen that logged heavy innings in the ALDS. +284 at DraftKings is the best price.

How We'd Play It

Straight bets, all four. The Over 6.5 is the anchor—12.5% EV, 54% model probability, best number at +108. If you only make one play, make it that one. The three RBI props are secondary shots, each with 6-7% edge and 24-33% EV. They're correlated to the total (more runs = more RBI chances), but not perfectly—props depend on individual sequencing and lineup spot.

Sizing: standard unit on the total, half unit on each RBI prop. A small two-leg parlay (Over + one RBI prop) is defensible if you want a lottery ticket, but the edges are strong enough to play separately.

Pass if: the total moves to 7.0 or higher (edge evaporates), or if late lineup news benches any of the three hitters. Yelich has been dealing with minor wear all postseason—if he's scratched or drops in the order, his prop loses value. Otherwise, the model says there's room between what we see and what the market is pricing. Take the spots, trust the math, and let the variance sort itself out over the long run.
